Broad Oak Stables Carting Guide
Carting with ponies and mares is one of the most enjoyable experiences that a Handler can share with a pony or mare, encompassing competitions, caravans, GTFO, or simply going out for a leisurely ride on a Saturday afternoon. Here at Broad Oak Stables, we share this enthusiasm for carting and believe in establishing standards to avoid frustration between the Driver (Handler) and the animal pulling.
Basics
The driver is always in charge, with the animal expected to follow directions at all times.
For first-time pairings, a quick warm-up using a whip circle is advised to familiarize both parties with basic commands.
The animal will be leashed to the driver to mitigate risks during accidental cart explosions or the odd TP anomaly caused by OC collars when unhitching an animal.
Animals should have their sense of direction blocked (Locations, Maps, and Mini-map) as the driver will navigate.
On Mainland, using a sim crossing indicator is recommended to mitigate risks at sim crossings. A free one is available at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Birchwood/49/214/86, titled “FREE SHIT” - the NT- Border Detector HUD.
Equipment
Broad Oak Stable carts are available in rezzers at all Broad Oak locations and are compatible with Abi’s Carting HUD, available at Second Life Marketplace - Abi's Carting Hud, for those who need one.
Whip Commands
1 crack: go forward
2 cracks: stop (This indicates a full stop, not a slowdown.)
3 cracks: turn left
4 cracks: turn right
5 cracks: back up
Tugging the reins, pulling on the reins, or using a voice HUD with “Whoa” are all acceptable methods to slow an animal and your cart. Boost is for catching up but should not be overused as it can make the cart hard to control.
Radio
When carting on the mainland, you can listen to Broad Oak Radio 24/7 in your browser here: https://global2.citrus3.com:2020/public/broadoakradio
Weekly Caravan
Broad Oak Stables conducts a weekly caravan from one of our many outstations every Tuesday at both 0930 SLT and another at 1830 SLT. This is a great opportunity for BOS members, friends, and guests from other stables to enjoy a group carting experience.
Pony Caravan
Run by our friends at Tall Tails Stables, usually once a month, Caravan is open to all. It's a relaxed carting experience across the community. Patience is key due to the number of participants. Listen to guides for the best experience, and give space to other carts during sim crossings.
GTFO
Get The Freight Out (GTFO) is a popular mini-game at Broad Oak Stables. Both Driver and Animal can participate, with the driver selecting destinations. The animal signals task completion with a stomp. GTFO HUDs are available for purchase: a trial HUD (up to level 5) for $L1 and the full HUD for $L699. Available in the Pony Tack Shop or on Market Place.
Competitions
Competitions and events are regularly announced in the Pony Info Group, with Broad Oak Stables sharing details as available.
This guide aims to enhance your carting experience at Broad Oak Stables, ensuring both fun and safety for Handlers and animals alike.
